Harper Adams University is a tight-knit community of extremely kind and passionate people. In my experience studying abroad at Harper, a great deal of my learning about agriculture came from discussions with my peers from agricultural backgrounds. Beyond that, Harper lends the opportunity to get real, hands-on, experience through working on the campus livestock units.
Do you have any tips for prospective students?
Sign up for as many clubs and shifts on the campus farms as possible, because you will make connections and learn hard skills that go far beyond what any classroom experience can give a student.
Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?
Harper's academic atmosphere will give you exactly what you put into it. While I felt that some of the coursework was not as rigorous as my home university, the projects that are assigned to students give a great deal of flexibility, and students who are seeking to aggressively learn throughout the university will undoubtedly have the opportunity to do so.
Describe the dorm life at your college.
Dorms are spacious, clean, and a nice environment. A lot of my greatest friends from study abroad were from my floor, and cooking with them in our kitchen was a great experience. The housekeeping staff were such a pleasure to chat with every week, too!
Describe the food and dining at your college.
I was not on a meal plan, as I cooked all my food, but I certainly miss stopping at the cafes on campus for a coffee and a snack. Whether you want sweet or savory, there are always good options.
What’s there to do for fun at your college?
While it may seem daunting that Harper is so rural, the social scene is incredible. There are bars and central, parties on campus every week, and many socials for clubs. Beyond that, there are clubs that will satisfy nearly any interest one might have. Weekend trips to friends' farms or to Manchester or Birmingham are always a nice time, too.
Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?
Harper is so much more than classrooms and academics, and you can get a lot of out it if you are committed to doing so!
Which types of students will excel at your college?
Anyone with agricultural interests, self-starters, people who like hands-on work.
