Review of Harper Adams University

from Homer, NY

Describe your college in three sentences.

Going to Harper was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only was I immersed in the culture of the school, but I truly got a feel for rural life in the UK. There was never a day where I didn't learn something or meet someone new.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Do not feel that Harper's rural location means you do not have opportunities to travel or have a good time socially. Getting around using either campus provided transportation or taxis makes things easy. Also, a lot of flat mates are willing to take you with them when you are in need of going somewhere. In my four months at Harper, my flat mates became my family and were more than willing to help out when I was in need.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

Coming from a rigorous school in the United States, I have to admit the rigor at Harper Adams was not as high as what I was use to. However, that does not mean I was not challenged. I took it upon myself to take classes that I normally would not take back at home within Animal Science. As a dairy person, I made sure I did my projects on anything but dairy cows. The projects there are flexible and let you explore new topics you may know nothing about.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

As I said before, my flat mates became my family. The rooms are cleaned daily by the outstanding house keeping staff who also became part of my family as I was there. Each room has its own restroom, including a shower, which really made it feel like you had your own space in a country thousand miles away from home. The floor shared a kitchen which allowed for positive social gathering spots. Many nights, we stayed up talking until 2 in the morning. The dorm life at Harper may be my favorite part of my time there.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

This one is hard to review on because I was not on the dining plan and I made all my own food. However, the cafe in the library was one of my favorite places to stop quick before or after class. They have delicious drinks and snacks! I also really liked the store in the Faccenda building and wish I found it earlier during my time there.

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

It is safe to say there are plenty of things to do for fun at Harper. Like I said, do not let the rural setting fool you as there is plenty going on throughout the week. Also, the International Office does trips some weekends for minimal cost. If I remember right, we went to Liverpool for only 5 or 10 pounds and once we were there we were free to see whatever we wanted to see. I also decided to get a gym membership while I was over there and the staff and facilities are wonderful.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

My time at Harper was worth every penny. I learned a lot and had the time of my life. If I could, I would go back to Harper in a heart beat. The staff was first class. When I got to the UK, my luggage had been lost by the airlines. The staff in Student Services did everything in their power to make sure my luggage was returned to me quickly, which it was, as I did not have a phone or any way of tracking it down. The teaching staff was also outstanding in their fields.

Share any unusual traditions or locations on campus

Going to the bar on Wednesday nights was always a blast. Even if you do not like to partake in drinking, it was always fun just to go and dance with friends. A lot of the nights have themes, some get a little crazier than others, but it is all in good fun. Also, watching Six Nations rugby in the Welly was a great cultural experience.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

Harper is great for students who really care and love what they do. Being so hands on really improves skills and also gives experiences some students may not have ever done before. I also feel it is for students who know when it is time to be serious and know when it is okay to let loose and enjoy life.

Are you involved in any clubs or activities?

Whether it is going to the Welly or watching a sport match, there is almost always something to do! The weekends do die down a little bit as some people go home but that is a great time to go travel!

How would you describe campus safety? Do you feel safe on campus?

In my whole time there, I never once felt I wasn't safe. All buildings are locked and have alarm systems. Also, the people at Harper really look out for one another and always made me feel comfortable.
