Review of Fairmont State University

Describe your college in three sentences.

A small community within a small community. You have a lot of opportunities to experience different cultures and different activities in general. An overall great place.

Do you have any tips for prospective students?

Get as close with your professors as possible, that's always helpful in the long run. Make sure to get involved with the activities around the school. Don't get anything over a fifteen-meal meal plan: the food isn't fantastic, so its best to save your money in the Nickel, Ciabatta's, or wherever else you could eat. Also: get a car or get a friend with a car, because there isn't too much to do in the actual city of Fairmont on weekends. The surrounding areas are where you really want to go. Make friends with the upperclassmen because they can be a lot of help in all sorts of areas.

Do you find there’s enough academic rigor at your school?

While some classes really test my academic limits, others seem as if they're around high school level classes. Ask some upperclassmen to get their opinions on what you should take.

Describe the dorm life at your college.

Dorm life in Prichard is amazing: the rooms are big, we do a lot of dorm activities, and everyone is pretty friendly- not to mention we have our own cat (Raja) and a live-in professor. However, while I hear life in the other dorms aren't terrible, they do have their downfalls. Pence is difficult to get to and has a lot of rowdy parties, Bryant is notorious for their fire alarms, and Morrow is just downright creepy.

Describe the food and dining at your college.

You really don't want to go to the caf unless you have to. The staff are all very nice, but the food isn't (unless its breakfast, the breakfasts are always good). The Nickel is pretty expensive, but it works pretty well as a mini-grocery store. Ciabatta's and Hershey's staff are always extremely kind and everything there is great. The Starbucks is alright, but has limited options (it also closes early and can't take gift cards).

What’s there to do for fun at your college?

Always go to the activities you get endless emails about. I never exercise, but the exercise room is huge, and you can swim too. There's also a nearby movie theatre and a lot of open-late restaurants in the surrounding areas.

Do you feel you’re getting value for the money you’re spending on college?

Fairmont is exactly as they advertise, and while the tuition is a little higher than most, they offer a lot of scholarships.

Which types of students will excel at your college?

It's really great for any type of student. I was really withdrawn during high school, and while its still not a lot of social pressure, I was encouraged to hang out with more people, and it really helped open me up.
