The Ultimate Guide to the PSAT

The PSAT is a rite of passage on your journey to college. However, despite its significance, not everyone knows what the PSAT entails or how it can impact their future.

Understanding the purpose and benefits of this exam can empower you to make the most of your high school experience and set you on the path to success in your college applications. So, let’s dive into what the PSAT is all about and how it can help you achieve your academic goals!

What is the PSAT?

The PSAT is a standardized test that assesses your reading, math, writing, and language skills. Through this exam, you'll apply your knowledge to answer questions related to science, history, and real-world scenarios.

The PSAT is important for several reasons that can significantly impact your journey to college:

  1. The PSAT gives you a valuable practice opportunity for the SAT.
  2. A strong PSAT score can qualify you for the National Merit Scholarship Program, which offers scholarships and recognition to high-achieving students.
  3. The PSAT gives you feedback on your academic abilities, including detailed reports on which questions were missed.

How Can I Prepare for the PSAT?

You can view sample PSAT questions to get a feel for what to expect. They essentially ask you to demonstrate your academic grasp of real-world problems.

Does it the PSAT stay on my academic record?

The test is designed to get you ready for the ACT or SAT. It won’t count for anything on your school records – colleges won’t ask for this score, and it won’t have any impact on your GPA. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take it seriously.

Why doing well on the PSAT matters

Doing your best is critical. Taking the PSAT tells you where you need to improve to do well on the SAT or ACT later on. When you know where you need to study or what subjects trip you up, you can prepare better and boost your test scores when they matter.

Also, a great PSAT score can earn you money for college. The National Merit Scholarship program is always on the lookout for students with high PSAT scores – making the cut helps you secure scholarships or grants to lower the cost of college.

Most importantly, a strong PSAT score gives you a serious confidence boost. Feeling good about your ability to ace an important test will go a long way when it’s time to take the SAT or ACT.

Talk to your guidance counselor or a teacher to determine when you’ll take the PSAT. Even though studying isn’t a must, we recommend it!
